“Be vewwy, vewwy quiet . . .”


Mel Blanc died twenty-two years ago today. While he was a talented radioman and comedian, Blanc is best-known and best-loved for being the voice of many memorable cartoon characters, including and especially Elmer Fudd, Daffy Duck, Bugs Bunny, and Porky Pig. In fact, his incredible vocal virtuosity earned Blanc the much-deserved title “The Man of a Thousand Voices,” and it would be a fitting tribute to his genius to set aside a few minutes today to watch some of the Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies features that have for decades delighted people both young and old.

I can think of no more fitting way to end this brief eulogy than by allowing a far better spokesman than I to do so in the words that concluded so many of Mel Blanc’s great performances:
