Keystone Kandidates

Died on 8 September 1974 – Robert Cox, the last surviving member of the Keystone Kops, the spectacularly incompetent policemen featured in Mack Sennett’s masterful comedies between 1912 and 1917. I used to watch the hilarious Keystone Kops movies when I was a boy, and I had thought that I would never again see such quintessential buffoonery on a screen, but I was wrong. During the televised Republican presidential primary debate last night, I witnessed many performances which, at least intellectually, were as inept, ridiculous, and slapstick as anything the Keystone Kops had ever done.

I’m not sure whether the photograph below is of the Keystone Kops or the Republican presidential candidates, but really – does it matter?
