An Artful Moment: Oswaldo Guayasamin

Oswaldo Guayasamin (1919-1999) was an Ecuadorian artist of Quechuan descent whose paintings show both cubist and expressionist characteristics. Guayasamin had an abiding love for both Quito, the city of his birth, and the Andean peaks that surround it: “The Pichincha mountains are a pure expression of my mood; sometimes it arises a pink Quito, filled with light; at times, a black Quito, a red Quito, or that Quito from where breaks out a red that flows until the very deep.”
