Un Recordatorio

28 August 1565 – Spanish explorer and admiral Pedro Menendez de Aviles establishes St. Augustine, Florida, forty-two years before Jamestown, Virginia and fifty-five years before the Pilgrims landed on Plymouth Rock in Massachusetts, thus making it the oldest permanent settlement on the North American Continent. I think that in a time when the debate on immigration in America has grown so acrimonious, it is wise to recall that there were two streams of European settlement that converged to help form the United States: A Spanish one, from the south and southwest, and an English one, from the northeast.
