Here is part of the Artist Statement of folk artist April Wilson Harrison: “I paint images primarily in acrylics, powders, watercolors, pencils and collage. I find that working with this unique palette offers faster drying times, enabling me to overlay color in one painting session, giving the work its tapestry-like background. I often incorporate found objects into my paintings, such as coins from around the world, specialty papers, magazine print and interesting treasures I find on the street. Even my nearly discarded paintings are given new life and recycled into newer works of art, thus creating texture and dimension.”

American Art – Part V of VI: Gina Higgins

Here is painter Gina Higgins describing her artistic intentions in the exhibition American Noir: “American Noir is my modern interpretation of the movie genre of the 40s and 50s. I’m incorporating the aesthetic aspects of film noir and making them current. When most people hear the term ‘film noir’ they think of retro black and white melodramas, low-key lighting, crime dramas and such; but actually film noir’s influence has never really left. Directors like David Lynch, Quentin Tarantino, and Jim Jarmusch were obviously influenced by film noir. To me, it’s an intoxicating art form, not only visually, in terms of the lighting and camera angles, but also the archetypal characters and moral dilemmas in these movies leave a powerful impact on the viewer. American Noir is my personal representation of some of these elements that have touched me as an artist.”

It is like happiness, when we are happy.

American Art – Part VI of VI: Daryl Zang

Here is part of the Artist Statement of painter Daryl Zang: ”Art, for me, is deeply personal and I often describe my paintings as autobiographical. The greatest turning point in my work came when I found myself at home as a new mother. I began to paint the emotions I experienced everyday in order to create relatable images of my particular time and place. In my paintings, I stress ambivalence, isolation, and exhaustion but also the private, restful moments of peace that we all treasure in our hectic lives.
Women’s lives are so multifaceted that the potential for subject matter is seemingly endless. Despite what may be perceived as a narrow niche, I have found that the personal component of my work resonates with both men and women. There are themes common to all of us which are simply human.”
