21 June 1663 – The Inquisition forces Galileo to “abjure, curse, and detest” his Copernican/heliocentric view of the cosmos. This is just one more reason among countless others that “The Age of Faith” is better-known as “The Dark Ages.”
In case readers think that I am merely relating an interesting historical artifact in this posting, they should know that, according to a Gallup poll, fully 18% of Americans still “believe” in the wholly discredited but scripture-based Ptolemaic/geocentric view of the universe, and they want it taught as an “alternative model” in our public school science classes. A related and even more demoralizing Gallup poll revealed that 46% of Americans are Creationists who, despite overwhelming evidence in support of evolution, deny its biological factuality, while another survey revealed that 32% of Americans believe in the pseudo-scientific nonsense of Intelligent Design. This collective willful ignorance is nothing less than a national disgrace, and in my opinion, these geocentric-creationist-intelligent-design fools “abjure, curse, and detest” reality.
